This week, across Canada, it is Naturopathic Medicine Week! We are lucky to have amazing naturopathic doctors as part of our Natural Factors team. You may have read their blogs, seen them on social media, or even met them at one of the many community events they participate in.
We asked each of our NDs three questions we thought would allow you to get to know them a little better, and we’ll be sharing their answers here all week! So without further ado, it’s time to meet…
Jennifer Brix, ND
1. Why I Love What I Do
I absolutely love being a naturopathic doctor because I get to connect with patients on an individual basis, get down to the root cause of their health concerns, and empower patients to become a healthier version of themselves. From seeing children improve their marks in school after changing their diets, to helping someone finally get a good night’s sleep after years of insomnia, I am rewarded with patient success stories every day.
There are also days where I am researching a particular case for hours, but it’s a big part of what I love about what I do. Constantly learning, problem solving, and developing treatment plans are all part of being an ND. It is so wonderful to be able to appease my nerdy scientific brain, but also be a part of a person’s journey towards optimal health and wellness.
2. What Healthy Living Means to Me
Healthy living to me means living life with meaning and purpose, as well as keeping in mind our physical and physiological selves. What we do with our bodies – from sitting all day to exercising on a regular basis – and what we put into our bodies, is extremely important to our overall health. I believe in eating whole foods from local sources if possible, engaging in regular, but ENJOYABLE activity, and living in moderation.
I also supplement with nutrients that I know I can become deficient in, and support my body to prevent illnesses that I may be more predisposed to due to my family history.
3. What I Fill My Spare Time With
I love to be outdoors with my husband and our dog. We love to explore the mountains in our Kelowna backyard and go paddleboarding on the many lakes in the Okanagan. And of course, I love to create healthy dishes in my kitchen and share the benefits we can get from the food we eat with family, friends, and patients. As Hippocrates put it: “Let Food be thy Medicine”
