5 Ways to Support Healthy Kidneys

Kidneys play a crucial role in your overall health. They are responsible for the removal of waste from the body, keep fluids in balance, and make a number of hormones that are necessary for life [1]. With so many significant jobs, it is important to treat your kidneys well.

Here are five things you can do to support healthy kidneys:

Smoking slows blood flow to many important organs, including the kidneys. The decrease in blood flow makes it harder for the kidneys to do their job [2].

2. Hydrate


However, not too much. Consuming around 2–3 litres of water daily helps the kidneys clear waste from the body, and keeps everything running smoothly [3].

3. Eat healthy foods

A balanced diet made up of fresh, whole foods can help keep weight in check and can promote healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels already within the normal range to promote healthy kidney function [4].

Along with eating healthy, regular moderate exercise will help in the maintenance of a healthy weight [4].

5. Use caution with medications

Excessive amounts of some medications can be damaging to the kidneys. Speak with your health care practitioner or pharmacist before taking any new medications [3].
